Organised by

The Phoenix Astronomical Society
Astronomers gather after dark to do what they do best: compare equipment, discuss the sky, and observe the universe through telescopes.

8:00 pm – Introduction

Ian Cooper, President TPAS

A short welcome before we step outside and point our attention in the general direction of the universe.

8:10 pm – Laser Tour of the Night Sky

Ian Cooper

Ian guides us across the constellations with a laser pointer, identifying the stars, clusters, and galaxies currently on display above Wairarapa. Think of it as a guided tour of several hundred light-years of local scenery.

Followed by Telescope Viewing

8:30 pm – Observations Begin

TPAS will provide several telescopes, but participants are warmly encouraged to bring their own equipment for observing or astrophotography. There is plenty of space to spread out and make the most of Carterton’s dark skies.

A few practical notes for survival:

  • Wear warm clothing. Even galaxies prefer observers who are not shivering.
  • Use red lights only, unless you wish to be remembered for the rest of the evening.
  • Be prepared to stay longer than planned. This is a common side effect of clear skies.
