The stars are aligning for Wairarapa’s astronomy community. On 22 November, Dr Michelle Thaller, one of NASA’s most recognisable voices in astronomy, will beam in live from the United States to talk with The Phoenix Astronomical Society as part of The Phoenix Astronomy Lecture Series.
Dr Thaller recently retired as Assistant Director for Science Communication at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, capping nearly three decades of service that saw her explain the Universe to millions through The History Channel, Science Channel, and NASA TV. In this interactive session, she’ll share insights on recent discoveries in astronomy, how our understanding of the cosmos is changing, and what might come next in humanity’s exploration of the stars.
While the talk will be streamed online, those attending at Taratahi Hall will join the discussion live — with the rare opportunity to ask Dr Thaller questions in real time.
A New Era for The Phoenix Astronomical Society
This event marks another milestone in the Society’s renaissance. Now meeting at West Taratahi Hall, the group has reignited its focus on credible, evidence-based astronomy. Under the banner of The Phoenix Astro, our Phoenix Astronomical Society Lecture Series is a monthly talk series now featuring scientists, researchers, and professional astronomers who share real discoveries.
Past sessions have explored telescopes at the South Pole, solar-cycle imaging, comet research and Mars. The Society’s new direction celebrates curiosity, community, and critical thinking — a true rebirth worthy of its name.
