Part of Carterton Space Week 2026
1:00 – 4:30 PM and evening session TBD
Join members of the Phoenix Astronomical Society (TPAS) for an inspiring afternoon exploring the art and science of astrophotography in the heart of the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve.
Whether you’re taking your first steps into night sky photography or looking to improve your techniques, this hands-on workshop will introduce you to the tools, settings and skills used to capture stars, planets, the Milky Way and deep-sky objects.
Throughout the session, experienced astrophotographers will share their images, equipment, techniques and stories from beneath the Wairarapa night sky. You’ll learn practical tips on camera settings, focusing in the dark, planning your shoots, image composition and basic image processing.
Members of TPAS will also bring telescopes and equipment, giving participants an opportunity to see some of the tools used to explore and photograph the universe.
Bring your DSLR, mirrorless camera or smartphone if you have one. If not, come along, be inspired, and discover how ordinary people create extraordinary images of the cosmos.
The workshop will be followed by a practical sesion in the evening (with an alternate day for cloudy skies).
